A music school's website was not built for mobile: phones showed the desktop version in miniature. The code did not declare the language, so a screen reader could read the text with the wrong pronunciation. 19 of its 72 images had no alternative text and the home page had no main heading. Anyone arriving over https ended up at the unencrypted address. And two links returned errors, one of them the enrolment form.
What we built
- 41 pages migrated without losing content: a script compares the vocabulary of the original with the extracted text and stops if any page loses more than 2 %. Every photo and PDF is kept.
- Three versions: German in full; English for the home page, courses and offer (classes, instruments and ensembles), enrolment, teachers and contact; and Plain Language («Einfache Sprache») for home, offer, enrolment and contact. No translation plugin.
- Accessibility in the code, not in an overlay toolbar: language declared on every page, skip-to-content link, full keyboard navigation with a visible focus, AA contrast, tables with headers, no carousels. Checked with axe-core (WCAG 2.1 AA) on 14 pages at two widths: 0 failures.
- Alternative text on every photo, written by hand where it was missing.
- 95 301 redirects prepared so that the old routes under /cms/, the PDFs and the photos lead to their new address.
- Broken links and links showing the bare URL as their text fixed, with an internal link check on every publish.
